| The
work of volunteers is essential to the ongoing ministries of the
Temple. There are many ways that you can fulfill your membership
vows--"prayers, presence, gifts, service" - by offering
your time and your talents.

What exactly is The Tutoring Center of Chicago Temple?
Children arrive at the Temple at 4:00 pm. on Wednesdays. They take part in a large group activity offered by such institutions as the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Columbia School Chicago, Silk Road Theater Project, The Chicago Teacher Center, Flashpoint Academy, as well as individuals with unique careers and strong character. At 5pm, tutors arrive for one-to-one tutoring reading various genres of books together. The tutors find the experience meaningful and fun! The students look for their tutor every week and have much to share together.
The Tutoring Center begins with a class of fourth graders, and continues the tutor and student program through the eighth grade. May 12, 2010, the program graduated its first group of students with the program for five years. The longevity of the tutor to student partnership is unique among tutoring programs in Chicago.
Ruben Salazar is not a “neighborhood” public school. It is located on Wells and Oak, just across the street from Walter Payton High School. Yet, Ruben Salazar is housed in a 100 year-old building, has no lunchroom, no gym, no art or choir rooms nor fine arts teachers. The school serves students from Pilsen, Little Village and Back of the Yards neighborhoods. When they arrive at Salazar, many of the children are one to three years behind in reading test scores and are in need of one-on-one tutoring assistance that is provided at The Tutoring Center of Chicago Temple.
Awards
The program has been awarded two honors. The program was awarded the significant Outstanding Partnership Award in Chicago Public Schools from Mayor Daley in fall 2009. ChildServ awarded the “Religious Outreach Award,” to the Tutoring Center on Nov. 3, 2008.
